Favorite Things Sunday

This was my first week that I participated in "Sunday Favorites". (August 'o9) Hosting this event is Chari at Happy To Design. Visit all the people signing in at: http://happytodesign.blogspot.com/
Thanks Chari.

Tonight I went upstairs with good intentions of straightening out my pie safe cupboard that I use to store fabric, sewing stuff and anything else I just want to keep! Well, I found a box full of stuff and before I knew it, it was midnight. Well, now it is really Sunday!

Now, this was one of my favorite things!! . . . Until my dog thought it was his toy. I rescued it but it needs some major repair!

Just some things I had put away to save in the cupboard. There was a whole box of things.

Always liked this little picture. It's true (as with most animals), "A dog loves you no matter what."

I used to paint animals and wildlife, way back when the kids were little! This is a little one of one of our Abyssinian cats that I did.

I ran across a snapshot of Jack and I of the day we got married. (A younger me!! Wow look at all that hair, and what color is that anyway!)

This is a large piece of tatting that my Mom did. She used to work really fast with the little shuttle. (I think that's what it was called, not sure.)

A close-up of the tatting work.

A little piece of tatting my Mom did.

This is a beautiful, very old baby bonnet done with tatting. I don't think my Mom did this. Maybe her mother did. Isn't it precious! (My sister told me it was Mom's baby bonnet.)

The inside of this little bonnet is silk and soooo fragile.

All this old lace.

I have bags of old lace that I used to buy at garage sales and estate sales, auctions etc. when I had a shoppe. I haven't seen it in awhile. There must be something I could do with this. I know there are some crafty, beautiful things I could make but I don't know what. Do any of you have any ideas?? Something vintage or cottage looking . . .
Well, that's all for this evening. See, I never did get my cupboard straightened up. I constantly get distracted! That's why I have trouble getting anything done. Oh Hum! There's just not enough hours in the day.
Have a great Sunday.
Shirley

  1. Shirley, I love this post. The images are lovely and I really like your pie safe that you store all your wonderful things in.
How special that your mother could tat. It is a shuttle, and I have a friend who learned to do it with a needle.
The bonnet is so sweet, but the best part about this post is that I learned some new things about you.
I loved the photo of you and your hubby...we all had that big hair!
I loved your painting, too, and some day I hope you share more of it.
I would also like to know more about your shop that you had. I am sure I would have enjoyed going there.
Well, stay warm and I hope the horse are behaving.
    Hugs- Tete

  2. You have some wonderful favorite things! It is nice to take the time to reflect on the memories that come back as you clean your cupboards. That tatting work by your mom is just gorgeous!

  4. Thanks so much for stopping by and for your lovely comment.
I love all the pieces that your mom made, I have such a weak spot for vintage linens.

The bonnet is of course my favorite. I think that you should display it maybe in a shadow box frame with a picture of your mom as a baby and maybe with the small tatted doily that she made behind it. Not that you asked my opinion.

I also spent a good portion of the day organizing my craft stuff. I felt like I had opened up a can a worms!!!

  5. I LOVED your post and see myself. I have to laugh because I do the same thing, I sit in front of a cabinet meaning to straighten or rearrange and end up in memory lane... Love all your goodies and their stories. I'm a Lace-aholic, AND I'm proud of it... I have trunks and trunks and I LOVE incorporating it into nooks & crannies about the house! Use yours...Oh and your Mother's bonnet and the lace she made is "PRICELESS"!!!
    Hugs to you,
    Donna

  7. What perfect treasures. You are not alone in your distraction when on a 'mission' - I certainly suffer the same fate!

  8. Hi Shirley...

My friend, I often do the very same thing! Start on a cleaning/organizing project such as yours...and end up finding all kinds of things that I had forgotten! hehe! I loved getting to see your mother's tatting...gorgeous! Ohhh yes, I suspect there are all kinds of beautiful things that you can find to use that pretty lace for!

Thank you for joining in with the fun of our Sunday Favorites repost party this week!

    Warmest winter wishes,
    Chari @Happy To Design
