Thanksgiving Blizzard of 1950

I remember the Thanksgiving blizzard of 1950.
OK, I'm old!
I was eight years old.
We used to have Thanksgiving dinner at the Wickersham family farm
in East Springfield, PA.
We lived in Erie.
It was mom and dad and my sister Sue and my Grandma Wickersham in the car
as we headed to the farm on Route 20. That's when the storm got really bad.
Everything stopped.  Cars couldn't move any further.
There were no snow plows on the roads back then!!
I don't know how long we were stuck.
I do remember the Red Cross bringing coffee and cocoa to the cars along the road!
We were close to Girard, Pa and there was a little bar there if we had to go to the bathroom.
My grandmother was of Quaker descent and a staunch Baptist and would not go into a bar so there we sat.
I think we finally made it to the farm but I don't remember much else about the day!
I wish we took photos back then like we do now.
But we didn't carry around our little box cameras.

No, I'm not that old . . . we were in the family car.  Probably the Packard.

Here's a little bit about it on YouTube

Added addition:
I just talked to my sister and she said, we never got to the farm.
We turned around when we could and went back home.
Of course the turkey dinner was at the farm so we had hot dogs that year!
My sister's memory is still better than mine at this point!!!

Staying In!

I had things to do today; places to go, people to see! However, it's been snowing pretty good here all day. So unless I see my road clear up and some blue sky, I'm staying in!

I'm using this time to take my Christmas decorations down.
Maybe I'll start a fire in the fireplace.

Just A Little Snow

We had a couple days of beautiful sunny weather as the temperatures fell and we got just enough snow to be pretty.

Of course, Monk loves the colder temps and thinks he has to eat the snow!!!
Rocky would just rather stay in the warm house.

After an hour outside, Monk succumbs to nap time.
He sprawls himself out on the dining room floor.

Rocky curls up on the warm leather couch in the sun.

Seemed like a good day for chicken noodle soup to me!

Please, Winter END!

We are all hoping that this is the last big snowfall for this year! Yes, it's pretty but enough is enough!!!!

Satire's Winter Update

This post is linked to "Mosaic Monday" at The Little Red House.

Satire's Update
Here is a montage of photos my daughter took the other day.
Satire had his colic surgery the 1st of October and has completely recovered.
Not bad for a 32 year old!! Of course he is an Arab : ))
He is able to be ridden as of January however my daughter is being overly cautious and gave him an extra month of just ground work. He seems healthy and happy and his wonderful feisty personality is back too.

Visit Michele photography website for lots more photos.

Me . . . Sledding??

I'm linking this post to "Seasonal Sundays" at The Tablescaper.

Awwwww, Winter!

Actually, I've been thinking about doing this for awhile. Ever since we've had all this snow and we got some little sleds for the grandkids for Christmas.
So after using my toboggan to bring some firewood in, I told my sister to come out and take some pictures.
My driveway is long and has just a little decline. Well, I'm starting small!

I had to use my hands to get started.

Then I quickly picked up speed. What fun!
I mean I wasn't going at the speed of light or anything . . .
after all, there's a road down there!

Rocky didn't know what to think of it. I think he was watching for traffic!

No, I didn't tip over.

After going down about 3 times, I'm ready for a bigger hill!
Hmmmm, there's a bigger one on the golf course right on the other side of my vegetable garden. Of course that means I'd have to be walking back up. Too bad there's no tow rope!

Maybe I could tie Rocky to the sled and see if he'd pull me!
I'll save that for another day!
It's only 10 degrees out here!

Horses on the Snow

The day after the storm

I let the horses out in the paddock. They like being out in the snow. Nothing to eat so I threw out some flakes of hay after I took the pictures.

Isn't Preacher handsome in his plaid! Of course our "babies" are the only ones with coats!
Other than Satire because of his age and his recent surgery, the horses don't really have to have coats but it makes us humans feel better : )) We take them off if it's over 30 degrees.

Echo!!! Your coat is a mess!!!! What did you lay in?? (3 guesses!!)

The tracks they made in the new snow reminded me of a game we used to play when I was a kid. We'd make a big circle then cut across like pieces of a pie and there would be a "safe spot" in the middle. It was sort of a tag game but I can't think of the name for it if there was one!

It Snowed and Snowed

Yesterday I Was Snowbound

It just snowed and snowed all night and all day! My snowplow guy, Bruce, plowed my driveway, but by late afternoon you could hardly tell. Well, I wasn't going anywhere anyhow!

I trudged out to the mailbox. Doesn't my road look like it would be fun to sled down!

Cold, cold, cold.

My poor summer potting bench!

Oops, logs covered again!

These are hollyhock seed pods. They'll drop by wind (or my hand) and will get rained into the ground in the spring to add to my "hollyhock forest".

I'm loving my fireplace this winter!

2010's Beautiful Frost

FairyLand
One early morning right after my kitchen carpenter arrived last February, we looked outside and something magical had happened. We had what they call a "hoar frost". It happens when dew forms ice crystals and everything. The temperatures have to be exactly right and the ice crystals only last a short time if the sun comes out.
Even though there was over a foot of snow outside, we plodded through it to take pictures.
It was like a fairy land.
Linked to "Mosaic Monday
and "Blue Monday"

For the start of the new year I'm looking through my photos and putting up some of the memorable ones. I take tons of photographs so it's quite an undertaking!!
I will put them up periodically this month.

Have a great Monday

Same Day, More Snow

I thought it was appropriate to change the sign on my fence from Autumn to SNOW!!!!!!
Even though Winter doesn't officially start till Dec. 21st!

Almost to my knees!

Perhaps I should have brought more firewood in BEFORE the snow storm!!!!!
