Yesterday I Saw A Monarch

It was the first one I've seen this year.  She caught my eye fluttering past the window in my front garden.  I went out and quietly sat on the front porch.
I have several milk weed plants out there by the gate.
Last year I had one plant and this year 4 or 5, so I'm happy that they do multiply pretty easily.
That one plant, the milkweed, is the only thing that the Monarch caterpillar eats.
The ONLY thing.

SAVE MONARCHS FROM DOW'S CHEMICAL ASSAULT!

Industrial agricultural giant Dow Chemical unveiled its newest toxic herbicide, Enlist Duo, which would destroy milkweed plants that monarch butterflies need to survive. And monarch populations are crashing from nearly 1 billion butterflies 20 years ago to just 57 million last winter. Tell Dow's CEO to shelve the company's plan for selling this potent chemical cocktail — before it wreaks more destruction on monarchs.

Wouldn't it be tragic if we were the last generation to even get a glimpse of this beautiful creatures.
The Monarch yesterday was going from leaf to leaf scoping out my plants.  I'm hoping she will lay her eggs there.

Monarch butterflies go through four stages during one life cycle, and through four generations in one year. It’s a little confusing but keep reading and you will understand. The four stages of the monarch butterfly life cycle are the egg, the larvae (caterpillar), the pupa (chrysalis), and the adult butterfly. The four generations are actually four different butterflies going through these four stages during one year until it is time to start over again with stage one and generation one. - See more at: http://www.monarch-butterfly.com/#sthash.b2aDnG0T.dpuf

Stop using herbicides and pesticides!
There are nature things you can do in your gardens that won't kill off everything!!
This is from an article on eHow:

Advantages of Natural Products

  • Organic herbicides and pesticides have no toxic or poisonous chemicals that can harm wildlife, sources of water or humans. They also decompose quickly, leaving no residue on plants or in the soil. You might also save money when you choose natural alternatives.

Natural Herbicides

  • A mixture of white vinegar and essential oil of orange can be an effective remedy against certain weeds. Select 10 percent acidity white vinegar made from grain alcohol. Combine 1 gallon of vinegar with 1 oz. orange oil, pour into a spray bottle and apply to weeds on a warm, sunny day. Repeat the application every few days until weeds wilt and die.

Natural Pesticides

  • Many natural pesticides exist at local gardening centers. For aphids and other soft-bodied insects, use insecticidal soap. For snails and slugs, purchase iron phosphate granules. For caterpillars and other worms that eat plant foliage, purchase bacillus thuringiensis.
Last year I don't think I say any Monarchs!
I remember when I was young, you saw them in your gardens all summer.
Think before you spray!!

Blogging Help plus One Dead Tree

I mean, I'm asking for help or your opinion.
I've been blogging for quite a while.
Since 2009 I think.
After all this time I haven't really decided a niche for myself.
I mean some say that's what you should do.
Write on one subject.
I just write about everyday in the life of me and that has a whole lot of different subjects.
The thing that worries me is that my page views are dropping.
I mean, I never had a huge amount but they have dropped more than half.
I try to write a couple times a week; sometimes more, but it doesn't seem to make a difference!
If anyone out there has any ideas, please tell me!!
Leave me a comment.
I love comments!

OK
For today I want to tell you about my problem of a tall dead pine tree; well actually two!
(Sorry, that's my finger over the lens!)

Maybe you can see the wires going through the tree on this side of the trunk.
They are the main wires that supply electricity to my house!!
I've called a professional tree maintenance guy to come to take the tree down.
He's coming to look at it tomorrow.
I hope this doesn't cost a fortune!!
I can just see me burning the pile of brush in the foreground there, and a spark making that tree go up like a torch!!
Scary stuff.

Don't forget to let me know your opinion about my blogging.
Thanks!!

A Walk Around The Yard

Yesterday I was done with what I was doing and it was a pretty time of the evening.  I took a walk around the yard to see what I could see.
I first peeked into the bluebird house because I know mamma blue bird is sitting on eggs and I wanted at least one look.
Their eggs are so beautiful.  I'll leave her alone now till the babies get a good size, then I'll take another picture.
It's pretty how she put those feathers off to the side!  Very nice decorating!

In another garden I went to turn over an old iron pot and guess who's been storing nuts under there!!
So I just left it.

I walked past the pet cemetery.  It is bad need of a good weeding!
And now I have just the place for those weeds!  The chickens!!

Nestled in the woods in the ivy are a couple little guys.

My storm cellar doors are in bad need of repair or replacement before someone or maybe even Dexter falls right through them!!
Someday I'll show you what's in there from the basement side.  I don't like to open the door as it's all webby and spidery in there!!!

The two knockout roses that I thought were dead were severely pruned back and now are showing good growth.  I guess that's what they needed!

As I decided a year ago that I was going to stop all chemical weed killers and fertilizers, of course I have a lot of healthy weeds, both in the gardens and in the lawn!
But the chickens are healthy and since they are fed organic food and free range in their yard in the back, the eggs are very healthy.
I plan on over seeding any bare spots with pasture grass.
Hey, when you mow it's all green so what's the difference.
Well, there's a big difference to our environment and I sure wouldn't want to eat the eggs from chickens grazing on treated yards!

I'll end this post with a beautiful site I saw in the garden just as the sun was getting low.

I hope you weren't too bored with my little walk.

Dexter and His Chipmunk Quest

Dexter, an English Pointer, of course, is a bird dog.
However, they will point and hunt other things too if they are not trained just for pheasant or quail etc.
There in lies the problem.
Since Dexter is a rescue with no known history, we don't know if he was ever used for hunting.
My suspicion is that he is from show bloodlines, not the hunting bloodlines.
It doesn't matter to me since I don't ever plan on going hunting!
Dexter points everything!
Back yard birds at the feeders, chickens, cats, squirrels and chipmunks.
(And anything else that moves)
Well, under my front bird feeder the little chipmunks feed too.
I'm sure they also live under my kitchen porch there.
That's where these pictures are taken.
Dexter started digging at a chipmunk hole.
Oh My!

He digs then waits to see if anything pops up!
I tries to explain to him that he's not a terrier and he's not supposed to be a digger!!

And the hole is so much bigger today!
He has to have his feet hosed off after each outside experience!!
Oh Dexter!!

Another Time

I actually really enjoy hanging wash out to dry on my backyard clothes line.  My daughter says I'm trying to be like "Little House On The Prairie".
She may be right actually!
I have a fondness for those times and actually love the TV series "The Waltons" also.
Those programs are truly about family values and what people accomplished with very little money.  The importance of having to work for every penny and how those values were instilled in their children.
So different from today.
There's a whole lot of lessons to be learned from watching those programs.
"Little  House" is set in the 1870-1880s in Walnut Grove in Minnesota and "The Waltons" was set in the depression of 1930-1940s on Spencer's mountain in Virginia.
Family meant everything then.

My dryer has a problem sometimes and blows a circuit when run with anything else.  Maybe I just have a bad circuit breaker but until that is fixed I plan on hanging all my wash outside.  It actually dries faster outside than in the dryer!  And look at the electricity I'm saving!
Plus there's just something wonderful about doing it.
At least for me.

Outside Today

I'm usually greeted each morning with a couple eggs from the girls, then more in the afternoon.
I love collecting eggs!

I threw some fresh dirt and compost into the chicken run today.
They didn't waste any time scratching and pecking through it.

Pepsi is never far from the girls.

Dexter is doing well with his fence training.  He will have such a good time when he can finally be off leash and really examine the property!

Looks like spring is here to stay!!
Thank goodness!!!

Planting grass seed late!

My daughter has been trying to get me over to her house with my little Mantis tiller to till an area where a large tree was removed so she can get some grass seed planted.
I hope it's not too late in the fall, I don't think so.  If it doesn't take well, we'll just redo in the Spring.
Here's a few photos.  My sister took them for me.

Sometimes getting it started is a slight problem!

It does a great job though.  I used to have a big Troybilt tiller but couldn't handle that anymore.
This one is just right.

I can just throw it in my backseat and take it anywhere!!

We threw seed down and a little peat moss and said a little prayer!

All done.

Michele invited us in for coffee.  Don't look so excited about it Michele!

Her new Keurig coffee maker.

Here's her lab, Trouble.
We got him for her about 10 years ago as a little puppy.
Here's a link to the Christmas video when she got the puppy.
Love it!
