First Step To Quit Hoarding Food!

I followed Miss Merry's advice.  She left me a very helpful comment yesterday about me having and buying way too much food.
I went through all my canned and dry goods and collected everything that had an expired date.
I can't believe how much there was!

All this!!!!!

And this!!!!

I'm sure I got all this at good prices but what good is that when it's all going in the rubbish!!
What a waste of money.

Well, I did quite a bit of reading about expiration dates and "best by" dates and they don't always mean very much so I am making some calls to the food pantries like the Salvation Army and see if they could use some of these things.
If they can, that would make me feel so much better!!

I am not going to restock any of these things, except the baking powder, until I need it, then I'll just buy what I need.
No more filling up the pantry shelves with good bargains as I see that doesn't work.
I am no longer cooking for four!
And I no longer really eat that much!
I feel better when I eat small meals.

I also found some sites that give some good recipes for one.
Just Google them.

Well, I plan on just cooking from what I have until it is used.
I may come up with some very interesting meals!!

  1. Good for you Shirley. I do that about every 6 months and you don't realize how quickly they expire.
I also look at the expiration date when I am buying canned goods also.
    Have a great weekend.

  2. Shirley - I am so proud of you! What a great start! I know how awful you feel when you think of what you paid for all that food - but now it is a weight off your shoulders (and your cupboard shelves). As you eat your way through what remains, I know you are in for some interesting meals. Good Luck!

  3. OMG! All that food to waste...couldn't you give it to a home, because lots of foods can really hold up some time after due date by the manufacturer.
I don't care about the money more than the food wasted! I am so glad you are going to start buying just what you need or maybe things that hold up for a longer time. You did a great job.

    1. I'm going to contact some of the soup kitchens and the Salvation Army around here to see if they can use some of these things. It seems that expiration dates sometimes don't mean that much.
